Responsibilities

Responsibility is related to the word response, which originally had a religious meaning. A “call and response” is a sacred back-and-forth communication akin to a responsibility: we “step up” and participate when it’s our turn. We all have responsibilities for and to ourselves and other people.

In citizenship, we work to create the conditions, both internal and external, that support people in recovery in fulfilling whatever responsibilities they identify as being important to them.

Professionals working within systems and organizations–including health care providers, politicians, police, community leaders, etc.–have responsibilities too.  We collaborate with mental health professionals and others to build just and equitable systems that embrace a “citizenship” lens.
